AmUp's core proposition — finding people near you who want to do the same activities you do — requires sharing some personal information: your general location, your interests, your availability. For most people, that's a reasonable trade. But it's a trade that only makes sense if the platform gives you meaningful control over how that information is used and who sees it.

Private Accounts

By default, your AmUp profile is visible to other AmUp users. But you can switch to a private account at any time. When your account is private:

• Only users you've approved as followers can see your posts and activities
• Follow requests require your approval before they're granted
• Your profile information is not visible to users who aren't following you

A private account doesn't prevent you from discovering and joining public events — it just controls who can discover your profile and activities. This is the right setting for users who want to use AmUp to join other people's activities without publicly advertising their own.

Location Sharing Controls

Location is fundamental to AmUp — it's what makes local event discovery possible. But you have fine-grained control over how your location is used:

• Show my location: you can turn off location sharing entirely if you don't want other users to see where you are
• Vicinity distance: control how specific the location shown to others is — you can show your general neighbourhood without revealing your exact street
• Per-event location: event locations are set when you post the event, not derived from your real-time GPS position

Join Request Approval

One of the most important privacy features in AmUp is the join request system. When you post an event, it doesn't become a public event page that anyone can attend. Instead, interested users send you a join request, and you review their profile — photo, bio, activity history — before deciding whether to approve them.

This means you always know who is coming to your activity. You can decline anyone you're uncertain about, without explanation required. The join request model is fundamentally different from event platforms where events are open to the public and anyone can show up.

Block and Report

AmUp gives you the ability to block any user. When you block someone:

• They disappear from your search results, feed, and activity discovery
• They cannot see your profile, posts, or activities
• They cannot contact you or send join requests
• The block works in both directions — you also disappear from their view

You can also report users for violating community standards. Reported accounts are reviewed by the AmUp team.

Data Handling

AmUp stores your data on secure servers operated by DigitalOcean. Your data is encrypted in transit. Authentication tokens are encrypted and tied to your account. AmUp does not sell your personal data to third parties.
