Getting started with AmUp is quick. The interface is built around a single idea: activities happen at real places and real times, and the app should make it as easy as possible to find and join them. Here's exactly how it works.
Step 1: Create Your Profile
After downloading AmUp and creating an account, you'll set up a basic profile: a photo, a username, a short bio, and your country. You can also set your account to private if you prefer to control who can see your activity and follow you.
Your profile is what other users see when you request to join their event. A clear photo and a sentence or two about your interests goes a long way in getting your join requests approved.
Step 2: Browse Events Near You
Once you're in the app, you'll see a map and a timeline of events happening near your current location. You can filter by distance, activity type, or date. Events show the organiser's name, a description, the location, and when it's happening.
You can also browse events posted by people you follow, which gives you a curated feed from your existing connections on the platform.
Step 3: Request to Join
Found an event that interests you? Tap "Request to Join." You can send a short message to the organiser explaining your interest or relevant background (for example, "I'm a casual runner, usually doing about 5k at an easy pace — happy to keep your tempo"). This context helps the organiser make a decision.
The organiser reviews your profile and either approves or declines your request. If approved, you're confirmed for the activity. You'll receive a notification and can view the event details including exact meeting point.
Posting Your Own Event
You don't have to wait for someone else to organise something. Posting your own event is just as straightforward:
- Tap the + button on the home screen
- Write a title — be specific. "Morning run – Phoenix Park, 7am" works better than "Running"
- Add a description — pace, experience level, any gear needed
- Set the date, time and location — pin it on the map
- Add photos (optional but recommended — events with photos get more join requests)
- Choose tags to make your event discoverable
- Post
Your event is immediately visible to AmUp users near that location. Join requests will start coming in. You review each one, approve who you want, and decline the rest.
Clubs: For Recurring Activities
If you want to organise something regularly — a weekly running group, a monthly cycling club, a regular football kickabout — AmUp Clubs are the right tool. Create a Club, invite members (or make it public so anyone can join), and post events within it. Club members are automatically notified of new events. This is how you build a consistent local community rather than one-off meetups.
After the Activity
After the event, participants can connect and follow each other on AmUp. The people you've met through activities become your connections on the platform, and you'll see their future events in your feed. This network effect is what makes AmUp progressively more valuable the longer you use it — your social circle grows with every activity.
